Community Health Services

Since its inception in 1978, Preferred Behavioral Health (PBH) of NJ has been a leader in the provision of behavioral health and related social services to the residents of Ocean County. PBH provides a comprehensive continuum of services including outpatient therapy, psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring, substance abuse services, day treatment programs, residential services, supported education, supported employment and clinical case management. We also offer a range of services for children and families including the Family Success Center, school-based programs, Shore Youth Center, supervised visitation and the Child Protection Substance Abuse Initiative. For employers, we offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This service is a low-cost benefit that ensures employees get the help they need to cope with personal problems which may be affecting their job performance. PBH also has a Speaker’s Bureau which provides presentations on a variety of behavioral health and life-adjustment topics such as stress management, substance abuse, grief and parenting, just to name a few.

We are available when crises occur, whether it is in our schools, our municipalities or a local workplace. Throughout our 31-year history, we have steadily grown and expanded in response to consumer and community need.

We have 400 employees, including licensed social workers, psychologists and substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists and registered and advanced practice nurses. A number of our programs are grant-funded and others accept Medicaid, Medicare and private insurances. We also offer a sliding-fee scale based on income and ability to pay for services. In addition to the Kimball and Community Medical Centers, the system operates several outpatient centers, including the Women’s & Children’s Specialty Center in Lakewood. This facility is the first and only one of its kind located in this New Jersey region, featuring the latest technology through its High-Risk Obstetrical Center and a multitude of pediatric specialty services.

Supporting the healthcare resources of these major campuses are a number of physician offices and specialty clinics. The quality medical facilities found in Lakewood and its closely surrounding area ensure that any health need, whether major or minor in nature, is conveniently treated.
