North Essex County Location

North Essex County is situated in northeastern New Jersey, within the great New York Metropolitan Area. Its position places it in the triangular area between I-80 and I-280, the latter of which offering a direct connection to New York City. From these two major highways, drivers can also reach the Garden State Parkway, I-95/NJ Turnpike, and the Lincoln or Holland tunnels. For local travel, residents utilize U.S. Highway 46 and State Route 23.

The county’s location is ideal for commuters, as New York City sits approximately 20 miles from the region. The county seat, Newark, is even closer, offering North Essex residents even more transportation options. Nearby Park & Ride locations at Willowbrook and Livingston malls offer a link to local destinations and transportation hubs in Newark.

Newark Penn Station is served by both Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor route and New Jersey Transit bus and rail. New York City is a short 12-minute ride from downtown Newark via NJ Transit’s high-speed light rail option. In addition, the station in Montclair, which is served by the MidTOWN DIRECT line, provides connections for students at Montclair State University.

Newark is also home to the modernized Newark Liberty International Airport, a good alternative to New York’s bustling John F. Kennedy International Airport—one of the world’s largest air terminals located under one hour from North Essex. General aviation needs are met through Essex County Airport, just one mile off I-80 at Route 46 in Fairfield.

Further commuter options in the North Essex County area can be found through DeCamp Bus Lines, a family-owned company that operates a fleet of buses from convenient locations in Montclair, the Caldwells, Roseland, Cedar Grove and Verona. Additionally, senior and handicapped travel options are offered in the Roseland/Caldwell area.
