Suburban Arts

The arts play an important role in the Summit area. The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, located in Summit since 1933 and newly renovated and doubled in size, is an outstanding instructional and museum facility. The Arts Center has grown steadily through the years to become a major art school and exhibition showplace. It provides an increasing variety of community art education and outreach programs designed to encourage the appreciation, enjoyment, and practice of art. An extensive curriculum of art classes, including a new state-of-the-art Digital Media Studio, is conducted year-round in large studios, with classes offered in all areas of the visual arts and geared to all ages and degrees of expertise. Year-round gallery exhibitions provide exposure to and enjoyment of contemporary art and attract visitors from around the state.

The region is also home to several drama groups, including the Summit Playhouse and the Stony Hill Players, and to musical ensembles such as the Summit Symphony, all of which provide exceptional entertainment.

For those who prefer cinema, the Beacon Hill Five in downtown Summit offers first-run movies in five theatres, all at one location; the Berkeley Cinema in Berkeley Heights offers first-run family movies.

The Summit Chorale, once located in Summit and now in residence at Drew University in nearby Madison, is New Jersey’s oldest active choral organization and is renowned for its adventurous programming. The Chorale offers exciting performances of fine choral music from medieval times to the present and has a rich heritage and history of music making. Many of its performances are held in the Summit, New Providence, and Berkeley Heights area.

The Paper Mill Playhouse, NJ’s premier theatre, is just a five-minute drive away in Millburn and annually mounts several first-rate productions of well known Broadway musicals as well as premieres of new works. And the lights of Broadway along with the many cultural attractions of New York City are less than an hour away.

For evenings filled with music, laughter, drama and song, there’s something for everyone!
