With its location nestled along the Pecos River, among the Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks; the Brantley Lake and Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Parks; and the Lincoln National Forest, there is never a shortage of outdoor recreation. While among the stunning backdrop of this scenic New Mexico region, one can enjoy such activities as hiking, fishing, horseback riding, boating, camping, backpacking and more.

The City of Carlsbad oversees and services more than 1,200 acres of parks in the community, which includes more than 40 well-maintained park sites and facilities. Playground equipment, ball fields, basketball courts, miles of multi-use trails and open spaces are only some of the amenities found through Carlsbad’s family-friendly parks.

A major community effort was put into the building of Playground on the Pecos, a 15,000 square foot wooden playground. Finished in September of 2002, Playground on the Pecos is characterized by towers, slides, hidden spaces, rock climbing areas and swings, while in view of the winding Pecos River. This project could not have been finished without the hard work of the civic-minded residents of Carlsbad.

Spanning 125.6 acres along the Pecos River, the Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area is utilized for a variety of reasons, ranging from picnicking and climbing the playground equipment to fishing, boating and further water sports. The area also boasts a six-mile paved trail and an 11.26-acre sports complex on its south side, composed of three racquetball courts. Also, there are nine tennis courts and a tennis pro shop that make up the Lake Carlsbad Tennis Complex. What’s more, the Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area is the site of several prominent annual events, including Relay for Life, Art-A-Fair, Hawgfest, United Way Community Day, the Chili Cook-Off and the 4th of July Fireworks Display.

Golfers revel in the city’s three courses, offering a great challenge to players of all skill levels. Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course encompasses two courses—the 1,300-yard, nine-hole course is optimal for beginners and seniors, while the 6,120-yard, 18-hole course offers a challenge through tight fairways and undulating greens. A driving range, putting green, pro shop and snack bar are on-site as well. Riverside Country Club is a further choice for a day on the greens. Golfers are afforded a first-class, 18-hole course stretching over 6,000 yards. In addition to the exciting course are tennis courts and a swimming pool.

Providing free family recreational entertainment is the extensive Riverwalk Recreation Center. Overlooking the Pecos River, the center offers three floors of activities for all ages to enjoy, including basketball courts, two indoor racquetball courts, an outdoor skate park, hockey rink, a fitness room, the Tottenhoff Activity Room and a calendar year of great programming.

One of the newest additions to the recreation community is the modern Carlsbad Youth Sports Complex. Opened within the last couple of years, the complex is currently home to six full-size youth softball fields, four full-size youth soccer fields and one football field, with the addition of several baseball fields to come. The Carlsbad Youth Sports Complex plays host to a number of leagues, events, team clinics and major tournaments, such as the USSA State Fastpitch Softball Tournament.

And while in Carlsbad, make sure to visit the Action Sports Complex & Shooting Range, a 645-acre recreation area providing patrons with activities and amenities such as an archery range, cross-wind runways for radio-controlled airplanes and plenty of options for fire arms practice.
