Outstanding educational resources are easily discovered in Carlsbad. From exceptional early childhood education programs through first-class institutions of higher learning, residents have access to it all without having to travel far from home.


The majority of Carlsbad students are enrolled through the Carlsbad Municipal School District, which is composed of 10 elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. In addition to these facilities is the Early Childhood Education Center, offering preschool, kindergarten and First Step First Grade learning opportunities, and the K-12 Jefferson Montessori Academy. On top of the regular curriculum offered through the district is the Phoenix Program, an alternative high school, as well as evening classes, special education services and a selection of extracurricular activities and clubs.

An alternative to the public schooling option through the Carlsbad Municipal School District can be discovered through St. Edward Catholic School. Here, students receive an exceptional parochial curriculum infused with the practice of Christianity and Catholicism. Faith Christian Academy and Victory Christian Academy are further choices located within Carlsbad.


Upon graduation from high school, many students choose a path towards higher learning. An excellent starting point for students is through New Mexico State University at Carlsbad, an exceptional two-year branch community college that was established as the state’s first branch of its kind in 1950.

Currently enrolling approximately 1,200 students, NMSU-C offers an assortment of one-year certificate and two-year associate degree programs, along with transfer programs and a number of non-credit programs designed for personal enrichment purposes. The college hails as the Eddy County provider of Adult Basic Education programs, comprised of GED-preparation coursework and tutoring, as well as English as a Second Language classes. On top of all this, new bachelor’s degree completion programs, plus master’s and doctoral degree programs, are offered through a collaboration between NMSU-C and NMSU-Las Cruces. Flexible class schedules during the day, evening and on weekends are available to accommodate students with full schedules.

While the University of the Southwest’s main campus is situated in Hobbs, NM, it has established a branch facility within Carlsbad. Formerly the College of the Southwest, a change that came about in 2008, USW-C offers Bachelor’s degrees, along with Master of Science in Education degrees. To accommodate busy students, USW-C also provides distance-learning options via fully interactive televisions in a classroom setting, as well as online coursework. Upon completion of the online program, students will receive a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree.In addition to its main campuses in Florida, Michigan and Texas, Northwood University operates 40 program centers throughout the U.S., which includes one in Carlsbad. Students can access Northwood’s University College Program at this location. The nontraditional program was designed to serve mature adults who are unable to enroll in traditional campus-based courses. Students are given the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Business Administration degree through classroom learning or online coursework. On top of the Adult Degree Program afforded through the Carlsbad Program Center is a Continuing Education Program.
