Jal

Jal

As the southern gateway to New Mexico, the folks in Jal are the first friendly faces you’ll see, with many more to follow. The Trail Ahead, a 100-foot metal sculpture depicting cattle drives, greets you as you approach Jal. This small town began as a ranching center and boomed nearly overnight in 1928 when oil and gas was discovered in the area. Education is a cornerstone here, led by the Woolworth Community Library, which contains more than 35,000 volumes. It’s not every town that can boast a 10-acre manmade lake that spells out its name! Of course, pilots get the best view! Jal is proud of the community spirit displayed at its annual events, such as Cowboy Days sponsored in March by the Chamber of Commerce. This event, dedicated to the ranching tradition of Jal, features cowboy poets and a real chuckwagon! The 4th of July and homecoming parades bring out all age groups. In October, area residents can’t wait for Jal-O-Rama, the annual chili and rib cook-off!
