White Sands Missile Range is the largest overland test range in the United States, occupying some 3,200 square miles of southern New Mexico. Some of the world’s most advanced and sophisticated weapons are tested at the missile range each year.

The missile range is considered a premier test facility for the Department of the Army and also supports testing for other service agencies as well as many cooperative foreign endeavors.

From the first atomic test at Trinity Site, and the development of the American V-2 rocket program, through today’s technologically advanced military systems, White Sands Missile Range has been on the leading edge of science and technology. Established as White Sands Proving Ground on July 9, 1945 and renamed White Sands Missile Range in 1958, the range has earned the designation “Birthplace of America’s Missile and Space Activity” by setting numerous firsts for America’s space program. Milestones included achieving the first high-altitude and velocity records for a single stage rocket and the first photographs of earth from space.

As Team White Sands, the missile range and its tenant activities continue to test today’s complex systems and provide the technology and trained personnel necessary to evaluate equipment of the future. A one-stop test location, White Sands Missile Range supports all aspects of system design, development and fielding in support of the Soldier.

In addition to its primary mission of test and evaluation, the missile range is enjoying an influx of troops as a function of the “Grow the Army” restructuring. Hundreds of soldiers that make up the Second Engineering Battalion began arriving in the summer of 2008. Presently, the local area economic impact of WSMR is approximately $1,800,000 per day.
