Community Introduction

Socorro County is the embodiment of “The Land of Enchantment.” With a wide open blue sky watching over the third largest county in New Mexico, Socorro County has a little bit of everything for everybody. Nestled within the surrounding high desert countryside, the Rio Grande cuts a green swath through the vistas.

Fertile farmland abounds in the valley, while wildlife teems in the mountains of Magdalena. The eastern part of the county offers a stark contrast to the green of the valley, with the dramatic and colorful Quebradas—our “badlands.”

As the geographic center of the state, Socorro County is also the heart and soul of New Mexico. As one of the oldest communities in New Mexico, it retains its ethnic heritage while at the same time forging ahead into the 21st century. Visitors to Socorro County frequently comment about the friendliness of the locals; “Mi casa es su casa” could be Socorro County’s motto. Everyone is welcome.

The City of Socorro is the economic hub of the county and region. There are countless opportunities for retail and manufacturing development. New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NM Tech), recently named by the Newsweek–Kaplan Guide magazine as one of the 25 hottest universities in the nation, provides research and development possibilities for faculty and students, as well as high-tech businesses, opportunities and continuing education.

Once you’re in Socorro County there is a lot to do. New Mexico Tech has a challenging, world-class golf course that offers year-round golf, and is perhaps Socorro’s best-kept secret. There are miles and miles of biking and hiking trails. The county is home to vast public lands, including two national wildlife refuges: Sevilleta and Bosque del Apache. For art aficionados Socorro County offers a vibrant arts community with several art galleries and artists in residence. The university’s Performing Arts Series brings in quality shows ranging from Arlo Guthrie and Chinese acrobats to symphony orchestras.

Socorro County has it all: breathtaking scenery, wildlife, exotic food, outdoor adventures, excellent education, history and cutting-edge technology. Yet our greatest asset is the friendliness of our residents. We are proud of our hometowns. Our slower pace of living soothes us. We marvel at our blue skies. And we want to share it with you.
