The entire family will find a wealth of recreational resources here in Catawba County. With an average of 300 days of sunshine annually and an average temperature of 58 degrees, Catawba County is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors.

Stock Car Racing, minor-league baseball and some of the best golfing in the world dominate a calendar filled with fun for all ages.

The Hickory Motor Speedway has been entertaining motorsports fans since 1950 when the NASCAR Grand National Division (now Winston Cup) would venture the high banked 1/8ths mile track. One of the most famous short tracks in the country, Hickory Motor Speedway is home to many current and former NASCAR Winston Cup stars.

The 1999 Winston Cup champion, Dale Jarrett, grew up at Hickory Motor Speedway as his champion father, Ned Jarrett, was at one time promoter of the speedway. Dale has visited the winner’s circle at Hickory along with many others including Dale Earnhardt, Harry Gant, Morgan Shepherd, Bobby Allison, Junior Johnson, and Bobby Isaac. The rich history easily makes the track a true "Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars."

graphicThe track roars into action every Saturday from March through October with the best short track racing around hosting 25-30 events each year.

At L.P. Frans Stadium, home of the Hickory Crawdads, "Take me out to the ball game" resounds from the bleachers while Conrad the Crawdad excites the crowd. The Class "A" affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates excites over 187,555 fans during 70 thrilling home games.

The Crawdad’s regular season runs April through August, with a playoff series following. They also hosted the 2001 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

Beautifully designed golf courses are abundant in the area and offer year-round play. Golfers can take advantage of memberships offered at Catawba Country

Club, Lake Hickory Country Club and Rock Barn Golf and Country Club. The public is also invited to play the many fabulous courses in the area including, Glen Oaks Golf Club, DL Tee Golf, Inc., Rock Barn Golf and Country Club and Silver Creek Plantation.

Water-skiing, boating, swimming, and fishing are some of the most popular sports on Lake Hickory and Lake Norman. In addition, 31,000 acres of land surrounding the lakes has been leased for recreational use.

If you are looking for family fun, the YMCA of Catawba Valley, with branches located in Conover, Hickory and on Hwy. 70, offers the county’s largest fitness and childcare facilities, along with youth sports, aquatics and family activities. graphicBeautiful swimming pools, clay and hard surface tennis courts are additional facilities available at Lake Hickory Country Club, Catawba Country Club, and Rock Golf and Country Club. A new facility in Catawba County is the Rock Barn Equestrian Center. The center offers English and Western riding lessons, as well as boarding and training horses. Catawba County also offers more than 20 public parks throughout the area. Residents and visitors can enjoy basketball and tennis courts, softball and soccer fields, walking, bikeway and fitness trails, swimming pools, boat docks and ramps, fishing piers, horseshoe pits, playground equipment, and picnic areas.

Lenoir-Rhyne College fields football, basketball, baseball, softball and soccer teams that compete at the NCAA Division II level in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears have a strong following of boosters and alumni supporters.

Whatever the sport or season, Catawba County offers a variety of recreational activities to thrill the entire family and invites you to join the action.
