Government

Did you know that Business Week magazine ranked Clayton the 10th best town in the nation for affordability and quality of schools?

A team of assessors for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies granted “full accreditation” to the Clayton Police Department. This makes the Clayton Police Department the only one in Johnston County to earn this prestigious status!

The Town of Clayton operates under a council-manager form of government, which consists of a mayor and five council members. The mayor and all council members are elected from the population at large. The mayor’s term is four years, while the council members serve staggered four-year terms.

The Clayton Town Council meets at Town Hall, located at 111 E. Second St., on the first and third Monday evenings of the month at 7:30 p.m. All meetings are open to the public.

Johnston County is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners elected from districts. The county employs a professional county manager who acts as the chief administrative officer. For information, call the Johnston County Manager’s Office at (919) 989-5100.

Town and County appointed boards (made up of residents who volunteer their time and expertise) meet as required. These include a Board of Adjustment, Planning Board, Downtown Development Association, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, Library Board, Fire Advisory Board, Tourism Authority, Airport Authority and Economic Development Commission plus numerous others.
