Health Care

Perhaps the sector of the Kernersville business community that is growing the fastest is Health Care. Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center hospital opened in 2011 and is licensed for 50 in-patient beds. According to Joanne Allen, President of Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center, the hospital treated 32,000 emergency room patients in 2014. The hospital handles an average of 300 surgical cases each month. Allen said, “Kernersville has a small town community feel but enjoys major medical center quality of health care. Kernersville has been able to attract physicians and expertise far beyond what a community our size could normally expect.” Industry-wide, the future emphasis is on keeping people well, not just treating patients.

Kernersville’s Cone Health MedCenter also operates a comprehensive health care facility in our community. Their concept of “one place, one team” brings together a network of 12 specialty offices in a one-stop location. Key services include an Urgent Care Center, primary care and family medicine facility, imaging, outpatient physical therapy, behavioral health, orthopedics, sports medicine, occupational health, and women’s health. Cone Health also reaches out to the community, providing a nurse onsite at the Kernersville Family YMCA once a week.

High Point Regional operates The Fitness Center at Kernersville, a comprehensive sports and wellness facility that specializes in exercise physiology and sports science. They also have a membership program for their wellness facility. Cornerstone Internal Medicine at Kernersville is located adjacent to the Fitness Center, offering a variety of internal medicine services.

FastMed Urgent Care Kernersville embraces the concept of “quick in and out” medical care. Its walk-in clinic includes urgent care, family practice, sports medicine and sports physicals.

In 2016, Kernersville will become home to a 280,000 square foot regional Veterans Affairs Health Center, located across the street from the Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center hospital. Both are located on the newly constructed Medical Center Parkway, which is expected to attract other advanced medical support practices. A new Macy Grove I-40 interchange increases accessibility to the entire area.

There was a time when Kernersville residents had to travel to neighboring communities for their health care needs. That time is now a distant memory. Kernersville is becoming a regional health care destination, making the community attractive both as a residential and business community.

The Triad also benefits from having a medical teaching facility in the region. Wake Forest Baptist Health is expanding their medical school facilities, which are now under construction in the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. The Winston-Salem hospital is ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the U.S. and is #1 in North Carolina for cancer treatment.

The community has excellent support services. The Kernersville Family YMCA provides an excellent follow-up program for cancer patients who have completed their treatment and seek to return to an active lifestyle. The 12-week program includes physical activities, counseling, nutrition guidance and peer group encouragement for cancer survivors. Cone Health Physical Therapy and Carolina Physical Therapy Specialists are two of the best-known physical therapy facilities. They both treat a variety of conditions that cause pain, limit mobility, or alter daily functions. These programs accelerate a person’s return to work and restore previous levels of physical activity.

When you need medical care, Kernersville has the full range of services right here in our community.
