Ambitious History

Settled in 1750 and named after John Wilkes (a prominent member of the British Parliament and once Lord Mayor of London), the county was officially formed in 1777. The Town of Wilkesboro, the county seat, was founded in 1847 and incorporated in 1889.

With the ambitious construction of the railroad linking Wilkes County to nearby destinations, North Wilkesboro was established in 1891, making its future development inevitable.
