Into this inviting environment has come a myriad of large and small businesses and industries producing a wide range of products including apparel and fabrics, electrical components, injection-molded plastic parts, office furniture, foods and more. About 20,000 residents are employed by area industry; major employers include Channel Master, Bayer Laboratories, Caterpillar, and Eaton Corporation. Historically an agricultural center, Johnston County also has more than 1,700 farms comprising 234,000 acres.

Smithfield-Selma is a shopping hub in Johnston County. The two communities’ downtown business districts and 11 shopping centers - including the largest, Carolina Outlet Center - provide shoppers a diverse selection of goods and services.
