Located only 28 miles from Raleigh, the state capital, and 45 minutes from the state’s widely acclaimed Research Triangle Park, Smithfield and Selma have convenient connections to the state and nation via Interstates 95 and 40, US 301 and 701, and state routes 36, 96 and 210. Amtrak serves passengers from the Selma station; businesses ship goods via the CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroads, and dozens of motor freight firms based in Raleigh.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport, about 45 minutes away, gives residents quick access to national and international airline service. The Johnston County Airport, just west of Smithfield, serves private and corporate aircraft.
