Gallipolis has outstanding recreation programs for both children and adults. Activities include baseball/softball leagues for youngsters; tennis; swimming lessons for beginners, intermediates and advanced; water aerobics; rinky-dink basketball; men’s basketball; art classes and women’s self-defense classes.
Swimming is available at the City Municipal Pool, as well as the indoor pools at the Gallipolis Developmental Center and Lyne Center at the University of Rio Grande. Cliffside Golf Course features an 18-hole semi-private course.
O. O. McIntyre Park District provides the 700-acre Raccoon Creek County Park, which has outdoor facilities and programming for year-round recreation. Available activities include tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, horseshoes, canoeing, baseball/softball and jogging trails. Two adventure playgrounds provide opportunities for creative play experiences. When walking along Deer Hollow Trail, visitors may observe abundant wildlife. Wild turkey, white tail deer, fox, raccoon and many varieties of birds can easily be spotted.
Because of access to the Ohio River, boating, fishing and other water sports are extremely popular in Gallia County.
The appeal of several lakes, stocked with a variety of fish, attract fishermen from numerous places. Gallia County has become a hunters’ paradise, with sportsmen coming from many miles away to enjoy the advantages of hunting deer and wild turkey.
