Two symphonies; one Eastern Oregon

Eastern Oregon is home to both the Oregon East Symphony and Inland Northwest Musicians.

Established in 1986, the Oregon East Symphony’s mission is to “operate, support and maintain a symphony orchestra, ensembles, chorale and youth classical music program in order to enhance the cultural wealth of the region through education and performance.”

In order to meet its mission, the symphony and its volunteer board of directors provides two streams of programming:

1. An annual concert series programed by the symphony’s musical director Dr. Beau Benson, featuring local musicians performing large-scale symphonic pieces, chorale works, debut performances of works by local composers, collaborations with pop groups and multimedia presentations.

2. Playing For Keeps, a K-12 classical music education program with the goal of transforming beginning musicians into contributing members of the symphony through a series of activities for various ages and skill levels.

Visit Oregon East Symphony at www.oregoneastsymphony.org for more information on programs and performances.

Located in Hermiston and celebrating 19 years, Inland Northwest Musicians ensembles have performed over 300 concerts in more than 40 different communities in Eastern Oregon and Southeast Washington. It is the only truly regional classical music organization in the Pacific Northwest.

Inland Northwest Musicians operates four performing ensembles:

• Inland Northwest Orchestra – a full symphony orchestra of approximately 50 members, with rehearsals held in Pendleton.

• Inland Northwest Chorale – a symphonic chorale group consisting of approximately 40 singers, with rehearsals held in Pendleton.

• Willow Creek Symphony – the west-oriented youth/preparatory orchestra consisting of approximately 30 members, currently rehearsing in Irrigon.

• Wallowa Valley Orchestra – the east-oriented youth/preparatory orchestra consisting of approximately 30 members with rehearsals held in Enterprise.

Inland Northwest Musicians offer musical experience for those who haven’t played an instrument for a long time and those who have been playing for only a couple of years. One of the concerts performed in the season is call the Young People’s Concert. This concert is performed in Hermiston by the Willow Creek Symphony and in the Wallowa Valley area by the orchestra and is for all fourth through sixth graders.
