Two symphonies; one Eastern Oregon

Eastern Oregon is home to both the Oregon East Symphony and Inland Northwest Musicians.Inland Northwest Musicians ensembles have performed over 400 concerts in more than 50 communities in Eastern Oregon and Southeast Washington. It is the only truly regional classical music organization in the Pacific Northwest.

Inland Northwest Musicians operates several performing ensembles:

Less experienced musicians of all ages (including adults) are welcome to participate in these last two ensembles.

Most musicians performing in the various Inland Northwest Musicians ensembles are volunteers.

R. Lee Friese serves as music director and conductor for all ensembles. He has a master’s degree in both choral and instrumental conducting from Bowling Green University in Ohio. He has over 30 years experience in conducting and in music education, and was founding conductor and music director of the Oregon East Symphony. Friese was one of the core founders of Inland Northwest Musicians in 1999.

Visit Inland Northwest Musicians at www.inlandnorthwestmusicians.com for more information on programs and performances.

Oregon East Symphony

Established in 1986, the Oregon East Symphony’s mission is to “operate, support and maintain a symphony orchestra, ensembles, chorale and youth classical music program in order to enhance the cultural wealth of the region through education and performance.”

For over 30 years, the Oregon East Symphony & Chorale has provided Pendleton and its surrounding rural region with high-quality musical experiences and events. A volunteer board of directors guides the organization, which is administered by a management team consisting of an executive director, program manager, publications manager and office manager. This team, with the help of many devoted volunteers, facilitates six diverse season concerts, fundraising events and a host of comprehensive musical education programs.

Music Director and Conductor Beau Benson, travels from Waco, Texas, to rehearse and conduct three symphony performances. Bruce Walker is assistant conductor and conductor for the A Sharp Players. Steve Muller, from Pendleton, is Chorale Director.

Musicians with the Oregon East Symphony & Chorale come from around the Pacific Northwest region to play. They hail from as far away as Portland, Eugene, Joseph, Baker City and La Grande in Oregon; and Spokane, Pullman, Vancouver, Tacoma, Ellensburg, Yakima, Tri-Cities and Walla Walla in Washington. The symphony encourages all musicians, young and old, to find their musical roots and join in the music. You will always be welcome in the orchestra that fits your level of performance.

In addition to its regular concert series, the symphony is committed to a unique and comprehensive youth music education project (Playing for Keeps) that supports, among other activities, two preparatory orchestras, a mentorship program for young musicians, scholarships for instrument rentals and music lessons and free concert tickets for students.

What does a one-room schoolhouse really look like?

Find out at Heritage Station Museum! The Umatilla County Historical Society’s museum in downtown Pendleton is housed in the former train depot turned museum that proudly tells the story of Umatilla County.

Take a trip through time and learn how Umatilla County became what it is today. Two galleries are filled with exhibits showcasing photos and artifacts that all relate to Umatilla County. Outside, step inside the Byrd School, a real one-room school house that was carefully relocated to the Heritage Station grounds. Climb aboard the fully refurbished 1909 Union Pacific Caboose and step inside the Fix Family’s one-room log cabin, built by Monrod Fix that once housed his family outside of Pilot Rock.

In 2018, UCHS began two major projects thanks to grants and contributions. Umatilla Gold, an exhibit that tells of the impact one crop had on Umatilla County: Wheat. Outside, the last building to be renovated on the property, the Signal House, contains a new exhibit celebrating the military history of Umatilla County.

Bring the family and enjoy a relaxing, self-guided tour of the museum. While you’re here, find out how you can be a part of history and telling the story.
