Education

The young people of West Chester are served by the West Chester Area School District, as are the small townships of East Bradford, East Goshen, West Goshen, West Whiteland, Westtown and Thornbury. An impressive 64 percent of the 900-member staff have, at the least, a master’s degree, leaving the student population in very capable hands. The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Blue Ribbon School award to the following outstanding West Chester Area schools: East and Henderson High Schools, Fugett Middle School and Hillsdale, Mary C. Howse and Sarah Starkweather Elementary Schools. Gifted programs and special education programs are offered by the district to accommodate all of the area’s learners.

West Chester is home to several private schooling options as well. A few of the private and religious institutions of the area include: Chester Christian School, Westtown School, St. Agnes Catholic School, Chesterbrook Academy Elementary School, Sts. Peter and Paul School and several more. Higher education is also accessible to students in the greater West Chester area, with West Chester University of Pennsylvania nearby. Several vocational and trade schools are represented in the area, like Devry University and ITT Technical Institute, and several institutions offering online degrees serve the area, like the University of Phoenix, Ashford University and Walden University. There are also plenty of higher education options in the nearby metropolises of Harrisburg and Philadelphia for those who would like to complement their educational pursuits with the feel of a bigger city.

The school systems of the Borough of West Chester aim for student success, and any student’s career path can be realized at one of the neighboring public schools, private schools, vocational schools or universities.
