Chamber Benefits

Mission Overview

The Chamber is a membership organization of businesses and professional leaders dedicated to promoting a strong business climate in the Black Hills. The Chamber works with member businesses and volunteers to provide leadership, advocacy, and action that will help the Rapid City Area achieve its potential as a desirable place to live, work and visit. The Chamber is Rapid City’s oldest and largest business advocacy organization and is one of only a handful of Chambers across the nation that has earned the prestigious 5-Star rating through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce accreditation process. With nearly 1,200 members and 129 years under its belt, Chamber membership is a sound business investment that works every day to make business strong in Rapid City.

Member Referrals

Businesses thrive on referrals, and the Chamber facilitates an environment for referrals every day. Each year thousands of consumers look to the Rapid City Chamber for recommendations of businesses in the area. When they ask, we refer only our members. The membership listings in both the printed and online business directory are just two of the great ways to receive business referrals. The directory is distributed to all members, potential residents, new airmen and families at Ellsworth Air Force Base, and is used regularly by members to find vendors and service providers.

Getting Connected

Face-to-face networking is a necessity in doing business, and the Chamber brings members together through a variety of events and volunteer opportunities which offer many ways to tap into the business community.

Monthly Chamber Mixers are one of the best networking tools provided by the Chamber. Typically held on the second Tuesday of every month, professionals have the capability of meeting potential customers, making vital contacts and learning from the knowledge of other successful business professionals in the community.

Promote Your Business

The Chamber offers many ways to help members better promote their business. Members can place an ad in the Chamber’s monthly publication, the Investment Report, and the Chamber Pak can be used as an inexpensive, “business-to-business” direct mailing tool which reaches almost 1,500 Chamber member businesses and associates each month.

Another way to effectively promote your business is to sponsor a Chamber event or by hosting a monthly mixer. This gives businesses direct access to Rapid City’s prime retail market. All of these services are available to any member of the Chamber.

The Gold Card Discount Program allows members to save money and gain business from fellow members. The program is comprised of member businesses who offer discounts exclusively to Chamber members. Every year we disperse thousands of these cards to our members who use them frequently.

Host a Ribbon Cutting

Have an official Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate an opening, relocation, expansion or big announcement. This is a free service for members, coordinated and attended by Chamber staff, members of the Chamber Ambassadors Committee and any other key community members or media that the business would like to invite. All Chamber member ribbon cuttings and ground breakings receive coverage in the Investment Report, on the Chamber’s Facebook page and website, and new members who host a ribbon cutting or ground breaking are given television and media recognition by KNBN News Center 1.

Chamber Resources

The Rapid City Chamber is a great resource for community information. Our website provides a current business directory and community calendar, and materials including a current list of city, state, county, and federal elected officials, speakers directory, service club listing, city maps, and business advocacy information are all just a phone call away. The Chamber also provides educational development and training opportunities for you and your employees at prices well below ‘market rates’. Members also receive regular communications about the Chamber and community events, as well as legislative updates on issues that affect our community on a local, state and national level. The Chamber can put you in contact with other professionals and business experts who can assist you with technology, marketing, networking and more. The Chamber is here to assist member businesses in obtaining the information they need to be successful.

What’s In It for Me?

What’s In It for Me? We all ask that question from time to time; perhaps now more than ever. It’s possible you’ve asked it of yourself lately in relation to your Chamber membership. Exactly what do you get as a result of your annual investment in the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce? When so many Chamber benefits are derived through intangibles that can be a tough question to answer.

Our Chamber spends an average of $876, per year, per member to uphold the services provided to each and every business we represent. That dollar amount includes expenses such as postage, printing, staffing, education and lobbying. Value gained through membership is significant; but in order to quantify this value, it may be helpful to put a price tag on specific benefits in order to gain a better perspective of the intrinsic value of your membership.

In reviewing the cost of some benefits which are more tangible in nature, we see that an annual members-only listing in the Chamber Membership Directory is valued at $175, a listing on the Chamber’s Website Directory has a value of $250, and an annual subscription to the Member’s Only Investment Report is $35. Referral services come in at $300 per annum and discounts derived from the Member-to-Member Gold Card program can easily amount to well over $500 a year. These numbers, of course, can be speculative, because return on investment in your Chamber membership can vary depending on you specifically and the type of business you’re in.

But in reviewing the numbers above, you can see that the average membership is worth over $1,000 before you even start looking at intangibles like the “credibility factor” which, simply put, means that people tend to trust and prefer working with businesses that are members of the Chamber of Commerce. Add to that the networking and educational opportunities and it’s clear to see that your Chamber membership is a sound investment with a substantial return.

During times such as these when you might be tempted to start cutting corners on expenses, remember this: Your membership through the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce is a solid investment that just makes good sense. Thank you for your commitment and continued support of the Chamber.
