Senior Lifestyles

Rapid City offers an engaging lifestyle for our senior population. Independent and assisted living facilities, skilled nursing centers, and two senior centers that provide the senior community a meeting place to pursue mutual interests, receive educational and nutritional services, participate in social and recreational activities that will enhance their dignity, support their independence and encourage their continued involvement in and with the community.

Assisted living centers vary in size, style and the optional services they may offer. Assisted living communities are for those seniors who want an independent lifestyle while still knowing that their specific daily needs are met. Needs that may include daily meals, dressing, bathing, medication assistance, transportation and personal mobility.

Independent living communities are for active, healthy seniors who are able to live on their own. You can live in a home, townhouse, condo, and even a mobile home or motor home. You can own or rent or live as part of a cooperative. Think of it like living in your old neighborhood except these communities have age restrictions – usually over 55 – and many offer amenities like clubhouses, gyms, yard maintenance, housekeeping, security, and social and cultural activities.

A nursing home is a place for a person who can’t be cared for at home but doesn’t need a hospital. Nursing homes typically have a nursing staff on site 24 hours a day and may offer physical, speech and occupational therapy. Some have special units for Alzheimer and dementia patients. Some homes are on campuses with multiple households. Resident dogs and cats can often be found in the homes.
