Built in 1893, it was accorded an official Texas historical medallion in 1972, and was listed in the National Registry in 1978.
Built in 1854, the Monroe Crook House (709 East Houston Avenue) is recognized as one of the finest early Greek revival houses in Texas. Both houses are representative of numerous other large vintage homes located throughout the county, and several historic homes now serve as bed and breakfasts.
