Attractive Place to Visit
Thousands of winter visitors are attracted to the southern Rio Grande Valley due to the semi-tropical climate and friendly people. Housing and recreation facilities have been expanded for the enjoyment of many "Winter Texans." Edinburg caters to helping visitors and newcomers enjoy the unique Mexican cultural heritage of the area.
Among the area’s many attractions is the Museum of South Texas History. The MSTH houses the largest collection of exhibits and artifacts of the region. Visitors travel through time beginning with the detailed exhibits of the Valley’s first prehistoric settlers through Spanish exploration and colonization, the Mexican War, Rio Grande steamboat era, Civil War, early ranching and farming, border wars and modern development. Of particular interest are cells of the original Hidalgo County Jail, and its unique Hanging Room, for the purpose of carrying out court-ordered executions. Stop and linger at the exhibit commemorating the life of local war hero Freddy Gonzalez posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for service in Vietnam.
