Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has a total of 35 schools, with a combined enrollment of 25,547, as of January 2004. An average of 1,000 students graduate each year. The ratio of students to teachers in elementary schools is 15.6 to 1; secondary schools are 15.3 to 1. Edinburg is also home to two private Catholic schools and a BETA Trade High School.
The University of Texas-Pan American was founded as Edinburg College in 1927. In 1989 the institution became part of the University of Texas system. Today it is the 10th largest public university in the state. The 200-acre campus has an enrollment of over 18,000 students. UT-Pan American offers 47 bachelors, 38 masters and two doctoral degrees in more than 50 fields of business, the arts and humanities, education, natural sciences and health sciences.
