Opportunities & Activities Abound

No matter what time of the year or season it may be, the City of Harker Heights Parks & Recreation Department will be busy planning opportunities and activities for young and old alike. The benefits of taking part in parks and recreation activities are truly endless …

Whether the school doors are open or closed, there is definitely no shortage of activities for the youth of the community. Children can enjoy age-appropriate sports like soccer, baseball and basketball. These sports are offered throughout the year. Annual contests such as Pepsi/NFL Punt Pass Kick and Pepsi Pitch Hit Run are also offered.

There are also many non-athletic activities for the youth in the community. There are enrichment classes (such as tae kwon do, gymnastics, cheerleading, hunter education and rock climbing) art programs — including Art Adventures, art summer camps, messy and Ooey Gooey Fridays, ballet and an acting/modeling/vocals class. During the summer, Christmas break and Spring Break, the department offers a wide range of day camps to keep the kids busy while out of school.

With the advent of the summer season, there is also a variety of youth athletic camps offered through the Parks and Recreation Department. These include Harker Heights High School camps — such as volleyball, soccer, softball, baseball, tennis and basketball. These camps are taught by the Harker Heights High School coaching staff at the high school. The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to offer the annual British Soccer Camp for kids ages three to 16. All of the athletic camps through the Parks and Recreation Department are designed to hone athletic skills, to teach proper sportsmanship, and to teach the value of teamwork.

If you are an adult looking at staying fit or active, available programs include adult exercise, yoga, water works, hapkido and an adult art class. There are also many opportunities for an adult to be an instructor, to volunteer as a coach or sign up as an official/referee.

For adults 55 and over, the Parks and Recreation Department offers many monthly programs, activities and events. Programs and activities such as table games, art classes, bingo, quilting, wood-carving and “Brain Games” help keep the young at heart mentally fit, while classes such as water aerobics, exercise classes, line dancing and square dancing help keep the individuals physically active.

To help cool off during the summer, visit the Harker Heights Swimming Pool in Carl Levin Park. The pool (which opens around Memorial Day) has structured activities such as water aerobics and youth swim lessons. For those who wish to swim and simply relax by the pool, the pool has open swim hours (1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday). Cost of admission is $1.00 for children, $2.00 for adults, and $1.00 for those 55 and over. The pool is also available for rental on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

If you have not visited the Harker Heights Recreation Center, you could be missing out on a variety of opportunities. Located at 307 Miller’s Crossing, the facility has a gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, two multi-purpose rooms, and a cardio room with exercise equipment. Open gym hours are 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Residents may register for all programs and activities at the Recreation Center. While visiting the Recreation Center, be sure to pick up the current edition of the Recreation Guide.

Special events abound during the year. Events include Easter Egg hunts, Halloween carnivals, 5k fun runs, Christmas celebrations, arts-n-crafts, health fairs, and the annual Star Fest event (co-sponsored with the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce).

Whether you are looking at participating in a program, being a volunteer coach or teaching a class at the Recreation Center, you’ll find out that parks and recreation plays a big part in the community. Passive and hands-on activities help promote healthier family lifestyles and healthier adults and children.

Take an active part in a Harker Heights Parks and Recreation program and you will quickly find out that the benefits are endless.
