Hereford's philosophy of cooperation and resource sharing extends to all of the emergency services in our community. The Hereford fire, police, and EMS departments work together to ensure the safety of Hereford residents and visitors.

The Hereford Emergency Medical Service is made up of a director and 14 staff persons. This department consists of 10 paramedics, one EMT Intermediate, and four EMT Basic certified employees. The Hereford EMS Department continues to train employees with classes made available locally through Amarillo College. The EMS Department covers a 1,750 square mile area that extends into New Mexico, and Parmer, Oldham, Randall, and Castro counties in Texas. The four Mobile Intensive Care Units respond to an average of 149 calls a month, with 52 of those calls requiring intensive care skills and equipment. Membership in the Panhandle Emergency Medical Service System (PEMSS) provides Deaf Smith County residents with access to an air ambulance evacuation service. In cases that HRMC is not equipped to handle, critically ill persons can be air lifted from the hospital or directly from the scene of an accident and transported to Amarillo. PEMSS medical crews operate out of the Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. The Hereford Regional Medical Center has a junior affiliation with the health care classes offered at the High School. Through the local medical facilities, students enrolled in the classes are able to gain the required clinical hours and ambulance runs to gain basic certification in CPR, and EMT training. The Hereford EMS department encourages safety throughout the community by offering classes to local schools on CPR, fire, and railroad crossing safety.
