McAllen is located in Southeast Texas’ Rio Grande Valley along the border between Mexico and the United States. It actually lies as far south as Miami — a mere four miles north of the Mexico border — and is 75 miles west of the Gulf of Mexico.

The city encompasses 46 square miles of Hidalgo County, which is 1,567 square miles large. U.S. 83 bisects the town from east to west; U.S. 281 provides an excellent north-south route. The Texas Department of Transportation has committed $220 million for roadway construction projects in the eight-county area, including Hidalgo, to improve traffic mobility.

The McAllen Miller International Airport serves a four-county area, and has seen boardings increase 43 percent from the early 1990s to today. Its new $26 million terminal can accommodate growth 30 years into the future, while the current runways can handle landing 757s. Continental Airlines and American Airlines provide passenger transportation to Dallas and Houston hubs daily, as well as to international destinations. The airport is also home to several air charters and seven air freight companies.

Seventeen common carriers offer motor freight services, and the city is served by five bus lines.
