Parks & Recreation

Outdoorsmen (whether they choose to hike, hunt, fish or bird-watch) find McAllen the perfect base to reach no less than 14 state and county park/lake areas. The options range from Falcon Dam to the Santa Ana Wildlife Range and the salt lakes at La Sal Del Rey Tract. You can even scuba dive from the artificial reef built just off South Padre Island or at Port Mansfield Liberty Ship Reef.

Hunters flock to our region in September, when the Valley becomes the only place in the country where you can take white-wing dove. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, javeline and wild pig are also available. The streams yield sport-fishing delights like bass, perch and catfish.

You don’t even have to leave McAllen to enjoy a family picnic at Botanical Garden, where hiking trails lead you through the region’s unique plant life. Or spend the day picking your own fruit right off the trees — most orchard owners invite the public to grab a sack and stroll their “grocery aisles.”Sure, we have Tex-Mex cuisine so delicious you’ll crave it year round. But McAllen residents love diversity — that’s why we support just as many Asian and Italian restaurants in our city. We also run the gamut from friendly fast food to quaint lunchtime cafes, five-star gourmet restaurants to all-you-can buffets.
