Government

govenment

McAllen’s government is run by a mayor and six-member of commissioners, all elected by the citizens. The board decides by lot which three representatives will serve a two-year term and which will sit for four-year terms.

Politics here truly center on public service – the mayor’s salary is set at $1,200 per year if he serves as city manager at the same time; $600 if he hires out that job. Commissioners receive $5 per each regular or special meeting of the board. If they meet more than twice in a month, the pay is capped at $10.

Our police department focuses on defining community policing policies, with a slogan of “meeting McAllen’s needs neighborhood by neighborhood.” The department supports a canine patrol, auto theft task force, explosive ordinance disposal, crime scene investigation, criminal investigation, bike and motorcycle patrols, airport patrol, emergency service unit, drug task force, warrant officer and traffic investigation unit.

The McAllen Fire Department has 117 certified fire fighters working out of six stations. The Department has six 1,500 gpm pumpers, two aerial platforms, two command vehicles and three ARRF units for airport emergencies. The Department operates an arson bureau as well.
