So Much To Do Outdoors
The Rio Grande Valley is the most popular birding location in the U.S., and McAllen sits smack in the middle of the region. People visit from all over the globe to see some of the bird species that cannot be found anywhere else in the entire country. There are many locations to view the local and migratory bird and butterfly species that have helped make McAllen famous with birders and butterflyers, and there are frequent nature-related special events that range from festivals to seminars. McAllen is also home to Quinta Mazatlan, the city’s World Birding Center headquarters. The city also offers amenities such as hike and bike trails, lists of local guides and free information for nature enthusiasts.
McAllen is a major snowbird destination — or, as we affectionately call them, Winter Texans. Many activities are geared to our northern visitors, from outdoor events such as the annual Street Markets to nationally-known indoor events like the Square Dance Jamboree, which attracts dancers from all over and gives McAllen bragging rights as the Square Dance Capital of the World.
