Goodfellow Airforce Base

Home to the 17th Training Wing, Goodfellow Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base subordinate to Air Education and Training Command. Located on more than 1,200 acres in the southeast corner of San Angelo, the base first opened in 1941. The 17th Training Wing traces its roots to 1927 when the War Department created the 17th Observation Group.

Later, when the unit became the 17th Bombardment Group, it flew its most famous mission in 1942 when 16 B-25s launched from an aircraft carrier during Lt. Col. Jimmy Dolittle’s famous raid on Tokyo in World War II.

The base itself was named after San Angelo native Lieutenant John Goodfellow, Jr., an aviator killed in World War I when he was shot down over Metz, France.

In 1958, Goodfellow entered a new era of training intelligence professionals for the Air Force Security Service. Today, the 17th Training Wing trains world-class firefighting and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance warriors. Currently, more than 6,000 active duty service members and civilian employees comprise the 17th Training Wing. Within the Goodfellow community are the training, mission support and medical groups. In addition to the units at Goodfellow, the wing also includes three geographically separated units located in California, Arizona and Florida that provide additional specialized intelligence training.

Among its associate units, Goodfellow is host to three joint services branches - the Navy’s Center for Information Dominance Detachment, the Marine Corps Detachment and the Army’s 344th Military Intelligence Battalion, the base’s largest associate unit.

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at Angelo State University also receives support from Goodfellow with an annual enrollment of more than 100 cadets.

Goodfellow’s annual economic impact on the San Angelo area remains significant at more than $513 million. Community relations between San Angelo and Goodfellow is renowned and acclaimed in the Department of Defense. Base members accomplish tens of thousands of community volunteer hours each year. In addition, over the past few years, individuals, units and the wing as a whole have earned some of the top awards in Air Education and Training Command and the Air Force.

The mind-set of the Goodfellow community is to build on the successes of the past as the wing continues to train world-class firefighting and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance warriors.
