Lexington Introduction


Located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Lexington is the county seat of Rockbridge County. Primarily rural in nature, Lexington is an important educational, retail and government center, and is named for the Revolutionary War battle fought at Lexington, Massachusetts. Rockbridge was named for its distinctive landmark, the Natural Bridge, now designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Agriculture is of major economic importance in Rockbridge County; more than 40 percent of its 607-square miles is farmland. Much of the remaining acreage is in national and state owned forest land.
