Community and family oriented events are held throughout the year in the Mount Vernon and Lee Districts.
The spring Wine Tasting Festival and Sunset Tour at Mount Vernon, George Washingtons former estate, is so popular that it usually sells out well in advance. In addition to wine tasting, this event includes live jazz music on the east lawn and mansion tours led by "Friends of George"-historic interpreters dressed in the style of 18th century Colonials. Cruise packages include a sightseeing tour along the Potomac.
At the annual Mount Vernon Community Day celebration, residents salute the onset of spring with a parade, stage entertainment, childrens activities and a taste of Mount Vernons finest restaurants.
The Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual Golf Classic each summer to raise scholarship funds for local high school graduates with an interest in business. In addition to an afternoon of golf, the event includes dinner and a silent auction.
From spring through fall, residents enjoy the bounty of local produce, flowers, honey, cider, plants, and baked goods at the Mount Vernon Farmers Market every Tuesday morning. The market is sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Several exciting events take place at Fort Belvoir. The annual Oktoberfest, Twilight Tattoo, and Fourth of July fireworks are just a few highlights with music and a bang.
