Fine Arts & Culture

The fine arts have long been an integral part of Virginia’s culture, and that tradition remains strong in Mount Vernon-Lee.

graphicThe Mount Vernon Orchestra, founded in 1972, features both professional and amateur musicians. The orchestra also sponsors the Mount Vernon Youth and Junior Orchestras, nurturing the talents of promising young musicians.

The orchestra performs several times throughout the year. During the summer months, it sponsors free chamber music concerts at The Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria. Concerts are held Sunday afternoons from June through September. A separate concert series is offered at Fort Hunt on Sunday evenings starting in June.

The popular Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre is considered the finest provider of drama instruction for children in northern Virginia. In addition to delighting audiences of all ages, this organization provides valuable training for young thespians, and provides a positive outlet for their creativity.

graphicMuseums and historic sites abound. One of the finest, the Collingwood Library and Museum on Americanism, sprawls over 8-plus acres along the Potomac, on what was once George Washington’s River Farm. The collection includes more than 5,000 volumes on American heritage and the 600-volume genealogy library of the Descendants of the Mayflower’s District of Columbia Chapter. While the historic treasures here are open to the public, the elegant buildings and grounds are available for weddings, receptions and other private functions as well.

The acclaimed Fairfax County Public Library is the state’s largest library system, with 21 branches. Libraries in the Mount Vernon-Lee areas include John Marshall Community Library, Lorton Community Library, Martha Washington Library, and Sherwood Regional Library.
