Schools in Powhatan
Students in the Powhatan area are academically challenged by excellent public and private educational systems. The Powhatan County School System is dedicated to providing quality education through the use of their facilities, implementation of technology and their experienced educators. There are three elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high and a high school that all work to prepare the community’s children for bright futures. The high school boasts some of the highest SOL scores in the state, and also has a Junior ROTC and cosmetology program for interested high school students. They offer to qualified seniors the opportunity to earn the equivalent of a year’s worth of college credits while completing their 12th grade year through The College Connection Academy.
Blessed Sacrament Huguenot is a Catholic college-preparatory school, grades Pre-12, dedicated to educating the whole child spiritually, academically, socially and physically. The diverse school family and the traditionally structured environment foster communication among students, faculty, home and administration. The school understands the importance of small class size, which allows the faculty to nurture and develop each student’s full God-given potential. Their mission is to graduate students who are goal-oriented, socially and morally responsible and equipped with the knowledge and skills to be successful in higher education and in life.
The Richmond metropolitan area is home to several colleges and universities, including the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Union University and Randolph-Macon College. Additionally, Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney, John Tyler Community College and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College are all located in nearby communities.

Powhatan County Public Library
First and foremost, the library’s mission is to meet the intellectual, educational, social, cultural and recreational needs of the community.
The Powhatan County Public Library provides access to a wide variety of materials (50,000 items) and services. The adult, young adult and children’s collections include novels and non-fiction, large print and talking books, movies, magazines and newspapers. The collection (card catalog), databases and resources are all accessible through the County Website, www.powhatanva.gov. Just click on the library button, located on the right side of the home page.
There are multiple high-speed Internet computers and wireless networks available for public use. Story hours are offered for preschoolers throughout the year. During the summer reading program please bring your school age children and check out the extremely popular events that take place in and around the library.
Community meetings may be held at the library. Please call us to reserve the large and small meeting rooms. In addition, there are two small study rooms, which are available on a first come, first serve basis. The library provides a color copier, laser printer and faxing services, all of which may be used for a minimal fee.
