Higher Education


Area residents do not need to travel far from home to seek a higher education. Whether you are a recent high school graduate or the working adult who wishes to obtain a college degree, excellence abounds among area institutions (from large, diverse campuses to a small, denominational setting), offering individuals a variety of learning environments. This region has top-notch technical education with several schools for specialization, as well as private and public colleges and an internationally recognized university. Several of the education institutions have been nationally recognized for their excellence in U.S. News & World Report’s “Survey of America’s Best Colleges.”

Tazewell County is home to Southwest Virginia Community College, which offers over 70 different programs of study leading to associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and career studies certificates.

Bluefield College (located in Bluefield, Virginia) is a private four-year, Christ-centered, liberal arts college that offers 17 majors. The college boasts nationally recognized academic and athletic programs. While attending Bluefield College, students will have an opportunity to see and change the world through international mission trips (these trips have included missions to South Africa, China and South America).

Bluefield State College is a four-year state supported commuter college that serves southeastern West Virginia with technical two and four-year programs. The college offers a variety of baccalaureate and associate degrees — including business, education, nursing and engineering.

Concord University (founded in 1872 in Athens, West Virginia) is a four-year public liberal arts university with a student-to-faculty ratio of 22:1. Approximately 2,900 students attend the university, and have opportunities to study abroad in Germany, England, Spain and Scotland. For the past four years, the university has been ranked by U.S. News & World’s Report as one of America’s best colleges.

Other quality educational opportunities in technical and certificate programs can be obtained at the National College of Business and Technology, Mercer County Technical Education Center, and the Valley College of Technology.
