History

Mercer County’s name honors the Revolutionary War here General Hugh Mercer, who died in battle for his new nation at Princeton, New Jersey. Many artifacts from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars still dot the landscape of Princeton and Mercer County. The Princeton-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce has its offices located in the only house left standing in Princeton that was not burnt during the Civil War (Dr. Robert B. McNutt House). The McNutt House was used as headquarters for Lt. Col. Rutherford B. Hayes and Sgt. William McKinley (both later Ohio Governors and U.S. Presidents)
