Community Intro

graphicSituated at the south shore of Lake Superior on Chequamegon Bay in northwest Wisconsin is Ashland, a town with a population of nearly 9,000. This area has attracted tourists for decades, but recently, people are choosing Ashland as their home.

Wisconsin is ranked in the top 10 as "the most livable state," with Ashland as one of its communities that has a lot to offer. Here are thousands of acres of northwoods land and hundreds of small lakes. Wildlife is abundant.

Ashland is a four-season community, with each season offering numerous activities and opportunities. The Greater Ashland Area offers bicycling, hiking, canoeing, sailing, boating, swimming, picnicking, fishing, golf, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowmobiling. And it offers these things in an environment that many are searching for today.

Thanks to Lake Superior, the weather is moderate, meaning warmer winters and cooler summers. This climate promotes great growing conditions for strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and apples.

Ashland is home to a diverse group of people who vary in professions and interests. However, the residents all take pride in maintaining the unique quality of life here. People are friendly and the pace is a bit slower.

Electric rates are third-lowest in the country. Homeowner insurance rates are the lowest in the U.S., and auto insurance rates are fifth- lowest. Meanwhile property values are rising, but most properties still may be acquired at a reasonable price.

The schools are outstanding. High school seniors top the nation in ACT scores. The high school dropout rate is one of the nation's lowest.

Healthcare is a priority.ot only are the medical services first-rate, but hospital patient care costs are 20 percent lower than the national average. Residents also have the fifth-best social health in the country.

In addition, there are major services and retail shopping within the city. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Local attractions include museums, theatre, a band shell and the Big Top Chautauqua, a 780-seat tent theater where well-known performers as well as new talent entertain during the summer season.

The Mural Committee has recently completed the sixth mural in the City of Ashland. Locals and tourists alike enjoy this walking tour of Ashland's history painted in mural form.

Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world, remains one of the favored attractions with its sparkling, cold blue water that offers a variety of year-round activities.
