Hales Corners features a wide selection of professional services. Whether you need to visit a dentist or schedule an appointment with an accountant, a physician, an engineer, an attorney, or a landscape designer, you can find these services in the Village. If you require hospital care, several facilities can be found within a short drive.
Some health services, such as well child clinics, adult health screening, and school health programs are available through the Hales Corners Health Department.
Convalescent care and adult day care services are also available locally.
Whitnall Park, the jewel of Milwaukee Countys park system, was created by the vision and skills of Charles B. Whitnall, the man known as the father of the Milwaukee County park system. Its 660 acres feature formal gardens, arboretum, 18-hole golf course, archery range, trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, toboggan slide, and ice skating pond as well as childrens play areas and picnicking facilities. About one-third of the park lies in Hales Corners.
A major attraction of the park is the world-famous Boerner Botanical Gardens. The 50-acre formal gardens include a perennial mall, herb garden, annual garden, rock garden, and shrub mall. Seasonal displays of wild flowers, tulips, crabapples, peonies, iris, roses, and daylilies are among the popular attractions. Special events include Boerner in Bloom in June and summer concerts in the gardens.
Within the boundaries of Whitnall Park is the Wehr Nature Center. This facility provides year-round nature programs, including many activities for families with young children.
Other parks within the Village provide a variety of additional recreational opportunities. Hales Corners Park features baseball diamonds, playfields, walking paths, picnic areas, and both adult and kiddie pools. Village-owned Schoetz Park offers an annually stocked fishing pond, youth baseball through the Whitnall Youth Baseball Association, and other recreational programs for children and teens.
History buffs will find plenty to do in Hales Corners. W. Ben Hunt, internationally known as an artist and writer, built a cabin in Hales Corners in 1924. That cabin, which now shares the site of the Hales Corners Library, features Native American artifacts collected by Hunt as well as his writings for Boys Life Magazine and the crafts he passed on to the Boy Scouts. The Hales Corners Historical Society sponsors periodic workshops that teach moccasin making, whittling, and beading. Nearby is the Hale Summer Kitchen and its adjacent displays, which depict the agricultural lifestyle of the area about 1850. The Milwaukee County Historical Society has designated both of these sites as official historical landmarks.
Hales Corners is located in the Whitnall Area School District, which also serves parts of the adjacent communities of Greenfield and Franklin. Within the Village are two public elementary schools. The middle and high schools are located just outside the Village. Altogether, Whitnall public schools enroll about 2,600 students.
Private schools are also available. St. Mary Catholic School and Hales Corners Lutheran School provide education for children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Private high schools in neighboring communities also attract students from Hales Corners
Behind the busy crossroads lie quiet, tree-lined residential areas. About two-thirds of the homes in the Village are single-family residences, many of which have half-acre lots. Newer developments include upscale apartments and condominiums.
