College and University

Western Technical College is a state technical college and part of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). The system was created over 100 years ago to meet the training and education needs of specific regions throughout the state. Western’s main campus is in La Crosse, but classes are offered throughout the region including Black River Falls, Independence, Mauston, Sparta, Tomah and Viroqua.

Western offers more than 100 programs of study including associate’s degrees, technical diplomas and certificates, as well as employment skills training and courses that transfer to four-year universities. The mission of the college is to provide relevant, high-quality education, in a collaborative and sustainable environment that changes the lives of students and grows the communities that they serve.

Community relationships are vital to Western. Each program has an advisory committee made up of people from local business who are either in that career or are considering hiring for that career, helping to ensure Western graduates have the skills they will need in the workforce. In addition, students get real-world experience by participating in related community service projects as part of their course work. The University of Wisconsin-Extension Office of Juneau County staff teaches, learns and serves Juneau County citizens by connecting them to the university’s resources. The extension office acts as catalyst for transforming lives and local communities through developing networks, inclusiveness, relationship-building, promoting lifelong learning and respect for one’s self and neighbors.

Juneau County’s University of Wisconsin-Extension offers 4-H and youth programming, the Advanced Leadership Program, volunteer training support and development, educational resources, environmental resources, farm and agricultural business support, food-nutrition-health education, horticultural training (Master Gardener Program) and support, home and family assistance, as well as starting a business and support of economic development. These programs wrap around life stages and respond to the concerns of citizens.

The Advanced Leadership Program strives to identify, cultivate and support leadership development in Juneau County. The ALP program collaborates with other organizations and businesses to deliver leadership training for area citizens. The program offers 10 sessions over a 10-month period, with each session geared toward a certain topic and/or community issue.

Pre-seminar assignments, classroom and experiential visits and activities are used in the learning process.

The ALP has had over 88 graduates since it started. The program provides a broad perspective on personal, political, economic, leadership and social issues impacting Juneau County and its citizens.
