Recreation

Local parks and recreation departments oversee a number of well-maintained park sites and facilities, and also provide a year-round listing of recreational programming and events for community members. In total, Sussex is home to 16 parks and facilities, Lisbon features six parks and Lannon offers two park sites. Among the many amenities available are playground equipment, ball fields, picnic shelters, nature trails and natural spaces, to name a few. The area also has access to the Waukesha County Park System, which operates eight parks and facilities in closely surrounding communities. Adding to the mix are several county-based lakes, providing great recreational opportunities for boaters, fishers and other water sport enthusiasts.

Golfers are afforded plenty of challenging options when it comes to spending a day on the greens. A number of excellent courses dot the map of Waukesha County, with the Sussex area itself hosting two courses. Located just outside of Sussex, the Fairways of Woodside is a modern 18-hole course nestled within the region’s picturesque countryside. The area is also home to the Ironwood Golf Course, a 27-hole golf destination comprised of three distinct and testing courses. Other notable courses near the Sussex area are the Silver Spring Golf & Banquet Center in Menomonee Falls and Songbird Hills Golf Club in Hartland.

Throughout the year, hikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers and snowmobilers have access to the Bugline Recreational Trail, a 12.2-mile trail winding along the former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad right-of-way. The trail travels from Menomonee Falls and Merton, right through the heart of the Sussex area. In the wintertime, skiers hit the slopes at Sussex’s Ausblick ski area, a membership ski club offering a variety of lessons, programs and events.

In addition to these recreational resources, the Sussex area utilizes the services and programs of the Tri-County YMCA, located close by in Menomonee Falls. The Y facility experienced a recent expansion and features a family gym, pool and family aquatic center, a well-equipped fitness center, basketball and racquetball/handball courts, as well as athletic fields and an indoor running/walking track. The programs offered through the Y are just as appealing and include everything from aquatics and group exercise classes to preschool programming and athletics.
