Laramie, “an outdoor town with an outlaw past,” offers all kinds of adventure both winter and summer. During the summer, there are horseback and wagon rides in the mountains and on the prairie – along with hiking, picnicking, camping, fishing, water sports and exploring the accessible Medicine Bow Peak (at 12,013 feet above sea level).
In town, there are cultural and heritage tours of the Wyoming Territorial Prison and Laramie Plains Museum. The Wyoming Children’s Museum and Nature Center offers a hands-on learning experience for all children. Come visit the animals, craft room and wild Western town located at the museum.
The UW Art Museum in the Centennial Complex and UW’s Geological Museum, planetarium and insect gallery are only a few of the more than a dozen museums throughout our historic area.
Want the Old West? You can watch gunfights by modern day “outlaws” or participate in Wyoming’s Hometown Celebration, Laramie Jubilee Days. This week-long celebration of Wyoming’s statehood has a kid’s parade, ranch rodeos, a July 4th “Fire in the Sky” Fireworks and Western Concert, Mr. T Calcutta and Bull Ride. A rip-roaring PRCA rodeo is the celebration finale.
In the winter, experience the Snowy Range Mountains on skis, snowshoes or snowmobile. The Snowy Range Ski and Recreation Area offers beginner, intermediate and expert trails, as well as a half pipe for snowboarders. There is also easy access to cross-country ski trails (maintained by the U.S. Forest Service at no charge) whether you travel from the Snowy Range Ski Area or park at any of the turnouts in the Medicine Bow Routt National Forest. Nominated by snowmobilers as one of the top 15 destinations in the west for snowmobiling, the Snowy Range has more than 300 miles of trails, with more than 200 miles of them groomed. If you choose an accommodation in Centennial, Albany or Woods Landing (three small mountain hamlets), you will be only minutes away from the snow and can actually snowmobile right from your front door at some locations.
Shopping, dining and just relaxing in the serenity of Laramie’s Historic Downtown District are perfect for a stress-free visit. Coffee shops, sports bars, brew pubs and bookstores can be found throughout the city. We look forward to seeing your surprise and pleasure when you visit our thriving community.
