Arts and Culture

The Homestead/Florida City area offers a diverse arts and culture scene. The Homestead Center for the Arts features professional theater groups and artists while involving the community by encouraging students and adults to pursue careers in the arts.

The Homestead Community Concert Association sponsors a professional concert series staged in the auditorium of a local high school.

ArtSouth has brought artists in residence to the community along with a myriad of galleries and exhibits through the renovation of the old 1st Baptist Church and school campus on historic Krome Avenue in Homestead. The campus offers classes in the fine and performing arts as well as works of art for purchase.

In addition to the arts, there are local museums to preserve area history. The Old Town Hall Museum, circa 1913, houses a museum, a vintage fire truck, antiques and a chronicle of 1992s devastating Hurricane Andrew. The Florida Pioneer Museum, housed in the old Florida East Coast Railway Depot, features exhibits on pioneer life and the area’s agricultural heritage as well as paying tribute to the role of the railroad in South Florida’s development.

The glittering, fast-paced cultural scene in Miami and the laid back local events in the Keys involve many members of the South Dade community. Writers’ conferences and theater festivals in both locales attract authors and playwrights from around the world, allowing residents to experience top-notch exhibits, events and entertainment without traveling far in any direction.
