The beautiful Illinois River Area, surrounded by sandstone bluffs, ravines, woods and prairies, was discovered by Native Americans and French explorers as they forged the winding river. Pioneers and settlers followed soon after, and farms and small communities quickly located along the riverbanks. Today, decades and generations later, ancestors of those founding families still own land and live in the area. With the natural tranquility this region offers, it is no wonder so many people make The Illinois River Area their home.

The region has developed into a vibrant locale that includes the communities of Seneca (population 2,050) and Marseilles (population 4,650). Both towns are located in LaSalle County, with Grundy County bordering Seneca to the east, less than one mile from the city limits.
