Winnebago County Agriculture

Agriculture has had an established presence in the county for over 150 years, even prior to urban settlement. It remains an integral part of the economic and social fabric of Winnebago and surrounding counties. The northern Illinois region benefits significantly from the proximity of food production and the world at-large depends on the surpluses of production yielded by the rich soils and technology of this particular farming region. As of the 2002 Dept. of Agriculture census, there were 695 farms in Winnebago County with 191,455 acres being farmed.

Agricultural sales of $62,000,000 contributed $14,000,000 to the local economy. Currently, 58 percent of the county’s land remains in farms and forests.
