Winnebago County Sports

Winnebago County is a diverse sports Mecca for spectators and participants. Amenities include four rivers, Rock Cut State Park (largest in the state), County Forest Preserves, city parks, 12 area golf courses, neighborhood tennis courts, a large amateur sports team network, as well as professional hockey, men’s and women’s baseball teams, and indoor football and soccer teams. The area attracts over 500,000 to softball and soccer tournaments each year at the Rockford Park District’s Indoor Soccer Complex and two Sportscore facilities.

The county’s four rivers provide assorted sporting opportunities, including fishing, boating, board and water-skiing. The Rock River provides a venue for local rowing clubs, and the “Head of the Rock Regatta” (first Sunday in October) features over 1,700 rowers from throughout the U.S. The world-class Ski-Broncs perform two nights a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A new whitewater park in downtown Rockford will become a hub for Midwestern paddlers and kayakers.

Golf Digest is sold on Rockford’s golf scene - they named Rockford the best mid-sized golf city in the U S. three years in a row! Golf Digest also named Aldeen Golf Club to the prestigious list of “Places to Play” giving it 4-1/2 stars. A BMX track is the site of bicycle motocross races in summer, and equestrian trails offer 40 miles of woods and meadows for area trail riders.

The Riverhawks, Rockford’s professional baseball team, takes to the field at a new Road Ranger Stadium where good-old-fashioned summertime baseball makes a visit to the ballpark a great family outing. The Rockford Ice Hogs (2007 United Hockey League Colonial Cup Champions) joined the American Hockey League in October of 2007, promising seasons of excitement to local fans.

Minor league sports include Rockford’s newest professional sports team, the Rockford Thunder, a women’s fast pitch softball team. Rock River Raptors compete in the United Indoor Football League, while the Rockford Youth Soccer League team takes to the court with a full schedule at the Rockford Park District’s Indoor Sports Center.

Feel the need for speed? Rockford Speedway is home to top-name NASCAR racing on a quarter-mile, high-banked track with more than 85 events per year. The Blackhawk Farms Raceway, located in northern Winnebago County, is home to SCCA sports car events, plus autocross, motorcycle and go-kart races.
