Mayor's Letter

On behalf of the Board of Aldermen and all the citizens of Jackson, I would like to welcome you to our growing and progressive city. Jackson, Missouri, is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County and is known as the city of beautiful homes, churches, schools, and parks.

The Jackson area combines vast expansive farmlands with dense woodlands and rolling hills. Jackson successfully blends its beautiful natural surroundings with unique shopping, popular restaurants, business and professional buildings, and quiet neighborhoods.

Founded in 1814, Jackson is the first community to be named after former President Andrew Jackson, who is displayed prominently on our shield. Jackson is the fastest growing city in southeast Missouri, yet we manage to keep the friendly, neighborly spirit associated with small-town America.

This growth in population began in the early 1990s. The 1990 population census was 9,200. In 2000, it was nearly 12,000. Today approximately 15,000 people call Jackson home.

Many stately, older homes blend with smaller, well-maintained homes in Jackson, with over 100 new homes being constructed each year. People move here because they enjoy the safe and secure neighborhoods and excellent schools for their children. Many residents have lived here their entire lives, which contributes to our strong sense of community and tradition.

Jackson is blessed with beautiful churches of many denominations, and our residents participate actively in worship services and many other spiritual events.

The city is home to the Reorganized School District R-II of Cape Girardeau County. The system consists of six elementary schools, one middle school, one junior high school, and one senior high school. Two parochial elementary schools are also included in our city. All of Jackson’s schools are known for their continued commitment to high-quality education for all students. A dedicated faculty and staff plus strong parent/community support make it possible for our students to perform well both academically and in extra-curricular activities and sports.

Jackson is extremely proud of its 225 acres of beautiful and well-maintained parks. Our many parks conveniently located throughout the city offer something for all citizens. In addition, our new recreational trail system is providing a link to all parks and schools.

Construction has recently been completed on the widening of Highway 34/72 to four lanes inside the city limits. The extension of East Main Street to the new I-55 interchange provides an east/west corridor through the city. These needed improvements will provide for increased commercial activity for the city.

Jackson maintains a mayor/board of aldermen form of government with a city administrator. The city has 130 employees, maintaining 13 departments that serve our community well. Our city council puts a high priority on expanding our infrastructure (sewer, water, electric, and streets) to keep up with the needs of our growing community and to improve the quality of life for our citizens.

As we look to the future, things look bright for the city of Jackson.

Sincerely, Barbara Lohr, Mayor
